Site Specific Dance

Site Specific Dance includes dance that correlates with the physical environment. It involves sensing the space around you, the environment you are in and going on an adventure to find opportunities for dance in everyday spaces.

"Making site work means that you're taking your creative process that is usually seen in a black box theater, out into the world, out into the public or out into nature" - Stephan Koplowitz Dean of The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance

The practical considerations include: nature and it's surprises including the animals and weather, safety of performers, crew and audience, crowd control as well as any permits or insurance required.

The environment provides opportunities to mirror, reflect or extend and use symbolism in your site specific dance. For example, students could brainstorm words to describe an area then move their body in a way that displays those adjectives.
